Claude vs Claude Code
Claude vs Claude Code is two Anthropic products on the same models. Claude is the assistant for writing, research, and analysis on the web, desktop, and mobile. Claude Code is the coding tool that puts those models in your terminal or a supported IDE, where they read a project, edit files, and run commands. To study the docs as a course, paste the URL into the AI course builder.
What Claude is
Anthropic describes Claude as an AI assistant trained with Constitutional AI. On claude.com, it processes large amounts of information, brainstorms, generates text and code, and helps you understand a subject.
The product overview calls Claude a collaborator you give a goal in plain language. It can hand back documents, spreadsheets, and slides for you to review and edit. It runs on the web and on iOS and Android. The desktop app, for macOS and Windows, reaches folders and applications on your computer. Claude can read code files in common languages, including Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Go, Rust, and SQL.
That same overview points coding work to a different product: for coding, visit Claude Code.
On the claude.com plan list, the Free plan includes chat, generating code, creating files, executing code, web search, and memory. Pro is the plan that lists Claude Code, along with projects and Research. Max is listed as 5x or 20x more usage than Pro. The help center says a Pro or Max subscription covers Claude on the web, desktop, and mobile apps and Claude Code in the terminal, under one subscription.
What Claude Code is
The help center defines Claude Code as a coding tool that gives you Claude models in your terminal or a supported IDE, so you can delegate coding tasks and still see what happens. The docs call it an agentic coding tool: it reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands, and works across files.
Claude Code's architecture page splits the loop in two. Models reason. Tools act. The page says that without tools, Claude can only respond with text, and that tools are what let it read code, edit files, run commands, and search the project. Sonnet is described as the model that handles most coding tasks. Opus is described as stronger reasoning for complex architecture decisions. You switch with /model during a session, or start with claude --model.
You run it by opening a project and starting claude, or by opening the VS Code or JetBrains extension, the Code tab in the desktop app, or claude.ai/code. The CLI is the most complete surface. The IDE extensions trade some CLI-only features for visual diffs and file context in the editor.
What each job looks like
The help center draws the line in two sentences. Use Claude for writing, research, analysis, and more, at work and at home. Use Claude Code for terminal-based coding workflows.
A Pro or Max plan also covers Claude Code in VS Code, in Cursor and other VS Code forks, and in JetBrains IDEs such as IntelliJ and PyCharm. Log in with the same Claude credentials you use in the terminal. IDE usage counts toward the same limits as Claude and Claude Code. When the shared limit is reached, both stop against that pool. You can wait for the reset, move to a higher plan, or continue on API credits if you accept that option. API credit use is billed at API rates, separate from the subscription price. If ANTHROPIC_API_KEY is set, Claude Code uses that key and you are charged for API usage instead of the subscription's included usage.
Paste a snippet into Claude when you want an explanation, a rewrite, or a draft you will apply yourself. Open Claude Code when the work sits in a repository: find the files, edit them, run the tests, and look at git. The quickstart says Claude Code reads project files as it needs them. You do not paste the tree in by hand.
CLAUDE.md at the project root is loaded at the start of every Claude Code session. Use it for coding standards, architecture decisions, preferred libraries, and review checklists. Claude on claude.com has its own memory, projects, and instructions. Those are separate from CLAUDE.md.
Where people mix them up
Claude can generate code. The Free plan says so, and the product reads code files. Claude Code is the product built to act on a repository: search it, edit it, and run the commands you already use.
Claude Code also runs outside a terminal. The same engine is in VS Code, JetBrains, the desktop app, and the browser. The help center still describes the job as terminal-based coding workflows, with the IDE extensions on the same Pro or Max subscription.
Ailurn sits beside both. It turns a prompt, a PDF, a docs URL, or a public GitHub repo into a structured course you take in the same workspace, with quizzes and flashcards from that material. It does not issue accredited certificates, and it does not import a YouTube link. Free includes planning and one lesson from a prompt. File attachments start on a paid plan. A public repository goes to GitHub to course, which builds the course from that repo's files.
Pick by the output
Use Claude when you want an answer, a draft, or a file to review in the assistant. Use Claude Code when you want a change in a project, checked by a command. On Pro or Max you keep one subscription. You choose the surface for the task, and both draw from the same usage limits.
